Celebrating National Travel & Tourism Week
Visit Fairfax celebrated National Travel & Tourism Week this past May, celebrating travel both "Then & Now" on the 35th anniversary of the 1983 congressional resolution.  Visit Fairfax held a reception to honor the hospitality industry (special thanks to Wolf Trap and all who were able to join us!) and partnered with our regional colleagues to spread the word about tourism in Northern Virginia. VIRGO Award
Visit Fairfax Wins for Niche Tourism
Visit Fairfax recently won a 2017 VIRGO Award for Niche Tourism: Eco/Adventure at the 2018 Virginia Association of Destination Marketing Organizations (VADMO) Tourism Symposium in Charlottesville.  The award highlighted the success of the "Travel for the Birds!" campaign. Annual Sales Mission in China
Capital Region USA Mission to China
Visit Fairfax recently participated in Capital Region USA's annual sales mission to China, which included direct sales calls, travel trade seminars, and media interviews in Beijing, Shenzhen, and Hong Kong. This mission also highlighted the accessibility to the region through the new non-stop Cathay Pacific flight into Washington Dulles International Airport, beginning this September.

Visit Fairfax Presents Government Bootcamp
Visit Fairfax recently presented and moderated a "Bidding on Government Meetings Bootcamp" to educate hoteliers about best practices when soliciting federal and state government business. The event was held on the George Mason University campus and speakers included Anna Urman, Chris Ley, and Garland Preddy. Learn more here.
Pamela Northam
Spotlight!
Virginia's First Lady, Pamela Northam, paid a visit to the new Virginia Gateway Welcome Center during National Travel & Tourism Week to chat with Visit Fairfax staff and learn about the rich history of the area. The welcome center is located only an hour and a half from Fairfax County and presents a new opportunity to entice travelers to make the county their base camp as they travel north along I-95.

Great Falls
Tourism at Area National Parks Generates $1.66 Billion in Economic Benefit
A new National Park Service report shows more than 57 million visitors to national parks in the national capital region spent $1.14 billion in 2017 that resulted in 16,330 jobs and had a cumulative benefit to the regional economy of $1.66 billion. These parks include two Fairfax County spots – Wolf Trap and the George Washington Memorial Parkway (of which Great Falls Park and Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve are a part of). Read full release here.

Discovery Trail Map
Fairfax County Launches New Discovery Trail Map
Fairfax County Park Authority's 2018 Discovery Trail Map highlights the rich diversity of wildlife you'll see in the county parks. The map encourages children and adults to explore 12 distinctive parks to learn about wildlife. Those who visit at least eight sites will receive a prize and be entered to win a bicycle. Claude Moore Colonial Farm's Future in Question
After several years of negotiations to secure a long-term lease agreement, it was recently reported that the National Park Service and Claude Moore Colonial Farm could not come to an agreement on a long-term lease agreement, putting the colonial farm attraction's future in question. The Friends of Claude Moore Colonial Farm have launched a "Save the Farm" campaign. Learn more here.
Metro Station
Metro Planning Multi-Year Project That Will Temporarily Close Numerous Stations
Metro is planning a three-year capital project that will reconstruct the outdoor platforms at 20 Metrorail stations to address structural deficiencies after decades of exposure to the elements. In the first phase, all stations south of Reagan National Airport will temporarily shut down during the summer of 2019. Metro is working to develop traffic mitigations and alternatives for customers.
